The Florence Biennale 2005

In December 2005 I had the great privilege to be one of the three women artists invited to represent New Zealand at the Florence Biennale.
This was the most wonderful experience for an artist such as myself, it gave me the opportunity to meet with artists from all over the world to discuss and explore contemporary art practice today.

(left) This is my submission for the Florence Biennnale.
It is called "An Icon for the 21st Century (the gospel according to Ruth)" It consists of etched glass, paint, perspex and light.

(right) This shows the entrance to the Fortezza De Basso where the Florence Biennale is held. The sculpture I am standing beside is by Carol Fuerman.
(below) I am setting up 'An Icon for the 21st Century' the day before the exhibition opened.

I would urge anyone who has been invited to attend the Biennale to take up the challenge and go. It is an experience that cannot be counted in dollar terms and like most things in life that are truly worthwhile you will get out of it what you put in.
For myself, I made some very special friendships and also some useful contacts that may help to further my art practice over the next few years.
